Soccer Fever (Hermanus Times)

ABAGOLD GOES YELLOW AND GREEN!

On Friday 11 June, Vuvuzelas could be heard all over the harbour. Abagold staff had their own “gees vang” festivity as a build-up towards the Soccer World Cup kick-off. The choir had been practicing diligently for the past month, and when the big day arrived for South Africa, they were just as ready as Bafana Bafana for their big moment!

COOKING UP A STORM!

In the kitchen, Elizabeth and her team had been busy cooking a scrumptious feast of traditional “Samp and Beans” since the previous day. By Friday the courtyard exploded with the aromatic fragrance of this customary African dish.

 FACE PAINTING

In the meantime, members of the choir had their faces painted with flag designs by teams on Bergsig and on Sea View.

 THE CHOIR

The Sea View courtyard was an explosion of yellow and green when the employees from Bergsig and the Factory arrived. The sound of Vuvuzelas elevated the mood even further and smiling painted faces bounced to the infectious rhythm and beat of the World Cup song as they waited for the choir who made their entrance singing and dancing.

The party officially “kicked off” with the beautiful harmonic voices of the choir leading everyone in the singing of our National Anthem. It was impossible to stand still when they followed this with their “Baleka Bafana” song with its catchy tune.

The choir with its 55 members (All Abagold staff) was led and initiated by Elizabeth Mabuya, who has been with Abagold for almost 11 years.

 THE CROWD

 DO THE DISKI!

The DJ kept the spirits high with Soccer World Cup songs in the background after which it was time for some dancing.

The Sea View group went first, with all 7 of them doing the booting, rolling, Table Mountain dance called “Diski”.

The Bergsig group named “Go with the flow” did just that! Freestyle dancing and hovering and hip-hopping, they performed their own adaptation of the soccer-boogie, much to the amusement of the crowd.

LUCKY DRAW

A selection of more than 40 soccer bits and pieces were up for grabs in a lucky draw. The names of all Abagold employees were put into a container and our “independent auditor”, Johan, ensured that all the names were there for the draw.
